This includes 96 hours of scheduled Remote Classroom via Zoom with a Live Instructor consisting of lecture, videos, quizzes, and exams. Followed by an in-person EMT Skills Lab conducted over 2 consecutive weeks that includes 64 hours of Skills, an in-person Final Exam and 8 hours of Psychomotor Skills Testing. 192 Hours Summarized:
NOTE - While the EMT Program totals 192 hours, students should know that out-of-class studying is required in order to pass this course. Typically, students are required to study at least 60-80 additional hours during the entire class period, maybe more for some students. Students will not be able to just show up, attend the class time, and pass this course without this extra effort. We encourage study groups and will allow study groups to use our facilities to study when available. Tutoring services are also available and the first 10 hours are free.
This EMT Initial Program is approved by both the California Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE) and the State of California through the Ventura County EMS Agency.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be eligible to take the National Registry certification exam, which serves as the current certifying exam for both the National Registry of EMTs (NREMT) and the State of California. Once students pass the NREMT exam and obtain an NREMT card, they will be nationally certified Emergency Medical Technicians. Students will then be able to register in the state of their choosing. Additional specific state requirements may apply. Please check your state to be sure they accept NREMT like California does.
The Skills Lab portion of this course is held at the Safety Unlimited Training Center in Simi Valley, California located at 2139 Tapo Street, Suite #228. A complete list of currently-scheduled courses is in the Schedule Tab. We add new training dates frequently so check back often for updates.
In addition to this Initial Hybrid (Synchronous) Remote Classroom version of this course, we offer 2 other options for Initial EMT training:
Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) provide out of hospital BLS (Basic Life Support) emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical services (EMS) system.
EMTs have the basic knowledge and skills to assess a patient's condition and to manage emergencies such as those related to respiratory, cardiac, or trauma incidents. EMTs generally function as part of a comprehensive EMS response system, under medical oversight. EMTs perform interventions with the basic equipment typically found on an ambulance.
EMTs are a critical link between the scene of an emergency and the health care system, and are commonly found employed by both private and public ambulance services, municipal EMS agencies, governments, hospitals, and fire departments.
The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course prepares the EMT student to provide prehospital assessment and care for patients of all ages with a variety of medical conditions and traumatic injuries. Areas of study include an introduction to emergency medical services systems, roles and responsibilities of EMT’s, anatomy and physiology, medical emergencies, trauma, special considerations for working in the prehospital setting, and providing patient transportation. Opportunity to develop the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities required to successfully pass the National Registry Emergency Medical Technician certification exam. Upon completion of said certification exam, an EMT may gain employment and/or progress to paramedic level training.
Students must be 18 years of age to complete the program.
Private EMT Training Programs in California need to be approved by the California Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE) as well as the local EMS Agency.
The BPPE has specific requirements that requires us to post certain information on our website including:
There are numerous reasons why we feel we are your best option for this important initial training step in your career. Below are just a few.
1
We are a private business, not a school funded by the government. That being said, we have a higher standard for our instructors, administrators and support personnel. We also hold our students to a higher standard and not only teach you how to be an EMT, but we teach you how to succeed in the healthcare industry. Additionally, we have several full-time EMS instructors with decades of experience as well as numerous part-time instructors that equally contribute to the program’s success. Other programs often have one, maybe two instructors, or last-minute fill-in instructors with no full-time staff. Our instructors all have offices on-site and are here to help you learn.
2
Unlike other private EMT Schools, we are not about simply failing as many students as we can to have them pay again and have to start all over. Close to 90% of our students pass the course the first time, and for those that don’t they admittedly did not put the work in needed to do so. Many of them have returned (at no cost) and have passed the second time after realizing they must put in the work. We get a lot of students who fail other programs because the only goal of many other schools is making money and getting repeat business from failing students. We would suggest, if you are considering another school, ask them how many people start a course versus how many usually finish. We have had students tell us 40 people started their course at another provider and only 2 finished.

We have been in business since 1993, and often mentor people just starting out in this industry. The owner is a retired Fire Captain (and Army Ranger), who has been an EMT since 1983. Our EMS Director with over 30 years in EMS also retired from the Fire Department, as did our EMS Manager and EMS Administrator. Our instructors consist of Paramedics, Nurses and EMTs with decades of experience who are all willing to answer questions and provide insight and guidance to our EMT Students.
We will do our part and put in the work, but you must do your part put in the work too.
So, if you are taking the EMT Program, to work on an ambulance, work as a lifeguard, become a firefighter, become a nurse, physician’s assistant or doctor, or simply to learn about EMS, Safety Unlimited is your best choice. This is not a college class, this is professional training and you deserve a professional training provider.
But don’t just take our word for it, either come out for a visit, or better yet, view Our Testimonials.
The Process is Simple
Step 1
Students attend 96 hours of scheduled Remote Classroom training via Zoom with a live instructor. Currently that is conducted M-W-F, 8am-5pm with one hour allowed for lunch. See below for sessions.
Step 2
Once Step 1 is complete, over a 2-week period, students attend a 64 hours in-person EMT Skills Lab conducted over 2 consecutive weeks in Simi Valley, CA, Monday to Friday of week 1, and Monday to Wednesday of week 2. Hours for the 2 week Skills Lab are 8am-5pm with one hour allowed for lunch. Students can select that session during the enrollment process; it must be taken AFTER the Remote Classroom portion.
Step 3
Students attend a Psychomotor Skills Examination Day on either Thursday or Friday of the Week 2.
Step 4
Students participate in clinical shifts. The clinical hours are typically a minimum of two 12-hour shifts on either an ambulance or in a hospital emergency room and require a minimum of 10 patient contacts. Additional clinical hours may be necessary to meet the minimum 10 patient contact requirement. Clinical shifts are arranged by the Safety Unlimited staff and will follow the 2-week in person session.
NOTE - It is recommended that students attend the 2-week in-person training session as close to the Remote Classroom Training as possible. The 2-week in person training must be taken within 6 months, unless prior approval is obtained.

Milissa, After Hours Program
"If you're looking for a program that's going to be extremely rewarding... I highly recommend Safety Unlimited's program."
Chris, Fast-track Program
"Here at Safety Unlimited they want you to get hands-on. They also want you to learn."
JJ, Fast-track Program
"I would absolutely recommend this program, ten times out of ten, it's a fantastic program."
Peter, After Hours Program"I had a great experience attending Safety Unlimited for my EMT training, especially through their Weekend Warrior program. As someone who works full-time, I really appreciated how accommodating the school was—they made it possible to balance both work and school without feeling overwhelmed.
Jules, the owner, truly cares about his students. He was incredibly supportive and always willing to lend a helping hand. Even after the program ended, he took the time to help me prepare for interviews, which made a huge difference in my confidence going into the field.
The instructors were equally amazing. Mike Stillwagon, David, and Case were my main instructors, and they created such a positive and encouraging learning environment. They, along with the rest of the staff, were always open to questions and made sure we actually understood the material—not just memorized it to pass a test. You can tell they genuinely want their students to succeed and be prepared for real-life situations.
Overall, I highly recommend Safety Unlimited to anyone considering EMT school. The support, flexibility, and dedication from both the owner and instructors made this an experience I’m truly grateful for."
Mckaylee, Weekend Warrior"My time in the EMT program at Safety Unlimited was truly a life-changing experience. From the very beginning, the instructors created an environment that was supportive, motivating, and focused on helping every student succeed. They didn’t just teach the class how to pass an exam—Safety Unlimited Staff and Instructors taught us how to think, act, and serve with confidence in real emergency situations.
The knowledge, hands-on training, and real-world insight I gained during the program have given me a strong foundation in emergency medical care. The instructors were incredibly patient, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about what they do. They took the time to make sure we understood the material and were always willing to answer questions or provide extra guidance when needed.
What stood out most was the sense of purpose the program instilled in me. Safety Unlimited helped prepare me not just to become an EMT, but to become someone who can truly make a difference in people’s lives during their most vulnerable moments. That kind of training and mentorship is something special. I will carry with me the rest of my medical career.
I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity to learn from such dedicated professionals, and I would highly recommend the EMT program at Safety Unlimited to anyone who is serious about entering the field of emergency medical services. The experience, support, and education I received there will always be remembered!"
Aaron, Fast-track"If you’re looking for a top-tier EMT program, this is it. Jules and the entire Safety Unlimited team genuinely care about their students and go above and beyond to set you up for success, both in the classroom and in your future career. I’ve heard plenty of stories about other programs leaving students unprepared for the NREMT, but that’s absolutely not the case here. If you’re willing to put in the time and effort, you’ll leave confident, capable, and ready for the national exam. I can’t recommend them highly enough."
