Who Should Take This Training?

This EMS-CE (1 hour) - Communication, Terminology, and Scene Size-up course is intended to provide EMTs the opportunity to review specific components of the EMT Refresher training. This training can be used as a brief refresher on a specific topic as well as to obtain Continuing Education Units (CEUs) to help EMTs or Paramedics fulfill continuing education requirements.

This course meets the qualification for National, State/Local, or Individual NCCP credit under distance education for the NREMT.

Course Objectives

The objectives of this EMS-CE (1 hour) - Communication, Terminology, and Scene Size-up course is intended to provide emergency medical services workers with an understanding of common EMS terminology, effective means of communicating with patients and or EMS personnel, and how to assess a scene with the goal of helping victims and protecting yourself.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

Complete a verbal and pre-hospital care report;
Identify communication systems and radio communication used by EMS members;
Communicate appropriately with patients and other personnel;
Utilize the anatomic terms used to identify body parts, positioning, etc.;
Identify hazards at and determine the safety of a scene;
Determine assistance needed at a scene; and
Much, much more.

About This Course

Following the completion of all training content and achievement of passing scores on all exams, students will need to complete a brief evaluation and confirm his/her identity. After doing so, the student will have access to the course completion certificate.

This course has a single section, followed by a final assignment and course evaluation. The course should take approximately one hour to complete.

Course Exams

This course has a final exam based on the content covered in the course. The exam consists of 10 questions selected at random from a larger pool of questions. A score of 80% or better is required to pass the exam. Students who do not pass the exam the first time may retake the exam as many times as necessary in order to pass.

EMS Continuing Education Credits

This course is approved for 1 Contact Hour of EMS Continuing Education by approved California EMS provider #56-0013, CAPCE Provider #SUNI0321.

This training meets the requirements for BLS/ALS Instructor-based Continuing Education.

Requirements

This training alone does not satisfy the requirements of the EMT Refresher training. To refresh EMT certification, students must the the complete 24-hour EMS-CE EMT Refresher Topics course, and have valid CPR certification and EMT Skills Testing, the latter of which can be provided by any certified EMS-CE instructor in your area.

While the 24-hour EMS-CE EMT Refresher Topics training is valid in California, each State EMS Agency establishes its own specific EMT certification requirements, many of which utilize the certification process of the NREMT.

Additionally, local EMS agencies, EMS providers, and medical directors can establish higher standards and requirements. Please contact your EMS Agency for specific recertification requirements.
